Give Me Splendid, Silent Sun by maboheme

Down and out in Bogalusa, where the summer sun don’t shine, just burns and churns and turns so bright ... All I can hear in my head is Louis Armstrong's rasping gravelly voice singing "...Bright blessed days...dark sacred nights. And I think to myself...what a wonderful world." The other lyrics of the song don't have anything to do with it, but those just keep filtering through my head. Honestly, the writing style in this is not anything like the things I typically enjoy, but this one really is beautiful. Its poetic and lyrical, with a burning and heat that inflames from under the skin. Its all feeling and touch and hedonistic warmth.

But then maboheme has that gift, you know? Bedtime Stories is one of the most lovely little Jensen&Jared pieces I've ever read. Again, that hedonistic warmth and poetic rhythm slide over your skin, only in this one tender and sloppy with a lightness that infuses the best kind of J2 stories. As it tells you, these are the kinds you listen to. Absolutely lovely, both of them.

Trouble is, all they want is each other, and a string of quiet epiphanies changes everything. Haven't we all read this like at least twice? Its just that good. Its funny how now it almost feels like a flashback fic - what with Sandy and Jared being together in the beginning and the slow easy discovery of feelings the boys have. I think it probably has one of the most perfect endings ever and each time a I read it my heart just thumps a little harder. It also makes me feel all soft and nostalgic for how young and sweet they both seem. Oh boys.

We Belong Together by not_refined

Wincest AU. Sam and Dean, growing up and growing closer together in the ordinary world. I'm not sure how I missed posting about this when I read it almost a year ago. But when I stumbled across it again I found it tore me up just as much the second time around. Hauntingly beautiful. Dean being fragile like this makes my heart clinch. I love how wonderful John is to both the boys in this. Anyway, I'm sure most people have read it as not_refined is well known for some really amazing stories. Like the Still Life 'verse. The damage done to Dean only makes him more beautiful. The innocence and struggle of life that make up the fabric of Dean and Sam's life in that story is breathtaking. These two stories just really touch something deep in me.

Jared thinks his life sucks (even if he denies feeling bad about). He starts college, which he didn't want and he swears he will not make friends there. But then he meets another student, a boy with emerald eyes, who draws and draws, and draws . . . Jensen is an amazing artist, he's mysteriously shy, and Jared finds himself fascinated to the point of obsession. Can anyone explain to me why stories like this are so immensely intriguing to me? I mean, yes, the writing is good and I like the characters and all that, but why is young, confused Jared and a 'damaged' Jensen so mesmerizing? (And I mean that in terms of 'damaged!Jensen', not as in someone with his disability being damaged, k?) Is it the childlike innocence that somehow can merge and weave seamlessly with mature, adult actions? I honestly don't know why, but stories like this always snag my attention. When they are written well then its a win-win for me - this was, btw, a win-win.

A miscommunication results in a hurt 10-year-old Dean and a heart-to-heart between Sam and John. AU - deaf!Dean. Schmoop! This is a short little thing, but it is absolutely touching and darling. Little Sam was adorably cute, Dean is more of a concept - and him being deaf is just plain interesting to me, and John is very John, but maybe he'll get a clue in this world. Anyway, I really really wish this were a larger 'verse. The author did the characters great and I love the emotion of the story.

Jared's a High School English Teacher. Jensen's a Part-Time Census Taker with Goals. They Like Each Other. A Lot. I always like reading vamphile's work. Its smart and crisp. The characters are fun and entertaining, but always adult and mature. Jensen's pretty cute in this with his perfectionist 'tude toward food. And Jared - dang, Jared almost read as a little too real for me! His issues with work? Very realistic - I totally could empathize with his despondency over his students. I think what I enjoyed the most, well besides the hot boy action *grins*, is the banter between Jensen and Josh! LOL. Yeah, once again a nice good read.

Each little kiss they share, Jared remembers. He remembers Jensen, does Jensen remember him? I thought this was a charming little story. To me, it kinda reads like a fairytale. I'm not sure how to explain that. But its a lovely story- as if I'm being told the story - about the boys as childhood friends and what happens when they find each other again as adults. I almost expected to find Jared sitting down telling this story to a child (his and Jensen's maybe?!) at the end. It was very sweet. And the image of those two little boys sneaking birthday treats and sharing a 'kiss' - so cute! Anyway, all around lovely and charming.

Wee Dean is Sick, Sammy does something nice for him. You know my favorite books are always the ones that are in layers - where you can read it and take it at face value and enjoy it or you can think deeper and get even more out of it, maybe even something really different. For all that this is a tiny tiny little thing - like a drabble - it has that. On top it is adorably sweet. I just want to *smoosh* bebe Sammy and Wee Dean. But for me, I see some real depth in the subtext. Dean's sick and where is John? Also, the last line has a world of meaning for me.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed this tiny morsel.

This is actually set in the middle of big epic series that isn't really my cup of tea, but there are few pieces that focus on little Sam or Dean that are absolutely precious. Like this one. Little Sammy just makes your ovaries tingle! There are a few more, like It's What You Do that can stand alone and are just heartbreaking snapshots of the boys growing up. They make me want to grab the boys and hold them tight and then maybe shake John Winchester within an inch of his life for choosing hunting and revenge over being a real father.

~I'm not going to go on and on about how much I *squee*-ed and *gushed* when I saw this. I think we all ADORE this series, don't we? Yeah, this part does NOT disappoint, I promise! And the sex!!! I love it when no two sex scenes are alike. When the couple is dynamic enough to be close in a variety of ways. Makes for a HOT! read too. Of course, the schmoop is amazing and sweet and perfectly balanced by the usting and angsting. *happysigh*

~ A unique plot with a feel good message. The author did a good job of showing Jensen's natural progression into someone new with the slivers of Jensen's memories curving the development in just the right way.

Jensen's life isn't perfect, but he's happy enough. He has friends (well, one friend and one roommate), a prospective career (if he can pass this stupid, stupid test which requires him to be able to talk to people), a sex life of sorts (with guys who are total jerkfaces and think Jensen is a dork, which is actually true), and a life-size Dalek costume with a voice modulator which lets him EXTERMINATE things (like the toaster). Then, out of nowhere, he also has Jared (gorgeous, wonderful, socially retarded, and already taken), and his life turns upside down in the blink of an eye. For the first time, Jensen has found what he wants, but how is he going to get it?
~ Why do I love this fic? Because I adore massive amounts of schmoopiness. Because Geek Jensen is the cutest thing Ever. Because boys who fart and love watching LoTR and Firefly are real boys. So.. just because.

~ I'm not big on politics and political fics can sometimes be a pain for me because I don't 'get it'; however this story was great! It was politically savvy, but written so I could easily follow it. It was fun and fast paced and interesting.

We get a little further from perfection each year on the road. Future fic: 5 years hence. Sam and Dean are still learning how to go on living. This story has some great characters - the original characters were well fleshed out, Jo and Ellen solid and Sam and Dean well done. And Jordy is a doll. The case they work on flows well within the plot of the real story and is easily something that could be on the show. Filled with confusion, devotion, hesitation and all sorts of complex emotions the relationship between the boys is painful and sweet - lovely, just lovely.

Do you think at some point I'll go through an entire day of fic reading and not stare dropped jaw at the screen thinking not "I can't believe I'm reading this", but "I can't believe I'm reading this and liking it!"

OMG. So I thought hey, I'm in the mood for some smut so I picked a well reviewed fic where the plot was that Jared and Jensen are porn stars. I mean, dude, the *point* of the fic was porn. So I was expecting hot and kinky. And yeah, I got that somewhat. Buuut what I wasn't expecting was an ACTUAL FREAKING PLOT. With actual good characterization. And sweet humor. And some angst. And Jared fucking Padalecki STILL being Jared fucking Padalecki while being a - in case you missed it the first time - PORN STAR. And Jensen Ackles?? Jensen - Mr. I'm So Gorgeous but Very Private Please Don't Ask Anything Personal - was still the same and yet (here it is again) a PORN STAR. And.... damn it. It was actually a good freaking fic. Not a bit of smut to pass the time. I just..I.. It's just fucking awesome. Hell, the worst part (if there is a 'worst' part in a good fic) was the actual porn.
So, give it a try and see what I mean: Off the Script by jasmasson Oh, the summary is: Jensen Ackles was the porn industry’s leading star for years, until Jared Padalecki came along. Jensen’s world-weary and disillusioned. Jared’s… not.

BTW - I think this is what the Big Wigs don't get in some fandoms where they freak out about fanfic. I am firmly convinced that my DEEP, HUMONGOUS INFATUATED love affairs with both Supernatural and Harry Potter were actually made so strong and deep not because of the 'official' works, but because of fandom. Sure, I started with the real things, but the *squees* and the fangirls/guys and the obsessiveness of others just feed the demon. What started as a Like-That-Could turned into a total Life-Long-Love because of fandom. I love Fandom.

(I do have to say that Buffy fandom helped, but I was in too deep in it before I discovered the fanfic. My baby-bro, amazingly enough, introduced me one fateful boring Christmas visit home.)

EDIT: And because I tend to go back and see what other gems good writers have I also found this little thing - just adorable cute. And, of course, hot sex. (*pauses* last PG fic...hmmm). Serious. The summary caught me: The thing was, Jared was made of steel. But not how you think!
OH! Also - I LOVE jasmasson's icon on this one.

Okay, so I found something that touched on the kink I've been on - a J2 KidFic! Now, I'm not as hot about J&J fics as I am about the Wincest. Even though this is the only fandom that I'll even read RPS in. But I found Yes Sir (I Don't Mean Maybe) by hkath. So the summary reads:
The path to parenthood is full of complications for Jared and Jensen, who are forced to take part in a trendy parenting class to improve their chances at adoption. Can they survive encounters with obsessive tabloid reporters and nosy talk-show hosts, handle the needs of a very special robot and resist the gravitational pull of the small planet called Vin Diesel? Will they come through unscathed and unscarred on the other side of this story? Will there be schmoop?

But I gave it a try. And yes, there was schmoop. And parenting. And some crackiness. But it was good. With dashes of hotness and smatters of angst. And awkward sweetness that just...*gulp*..*sigh*
