However, their friendship comes to an abrupt end when Jensen turns 13 and decides they can no longer hang out. Then the Ackles family moves away. Meeting up years later the two must overcome old issues - both with each other and in their lives since they parted company - to find what they both now need: love. I just love Jensen choice of career in this, I really really do. I also like how although Jared is hurt and sad and mopes a bit he's also an adult an ultimately isn't a pushover sap. I LOVE the comic style drawings - they are awesome and really add to the overall depth of the story.

He never cared what anyone ever said about him until the whispers threaten to overshadow his fledgling acting career and any chance he has of becoming more than just a random guy in Jensen Ackles' life. While they are both actors it is an AU as they are working on a movie together and not Supernatural. I can totally see Jared's easy charm and gorgeous smile getting all sorts of random hook-ups. How could anyone not want to hook-up with that? I only wish that last scene had been boosted up to an NC-17 rating. *wiggles eyebrows*

After Sam pulls Dean out of Hell, Dean stops talking. It takes a week for Sam to convince Dean to open his mouth so Sam can check that his tongue hasn’t been cut out. It takes two weeks for Sam to accept that Dean really isn’t talking. Then it takes a week of silence, the two of them sitting in the Impala like ventriloquist dummies, sitting in motel rooms like human taxidermy, before Sam decides to start talking for the both of them. Intense and powerful in its progression and development. For all that it is au-ish and different, it has a darkly realistic quality to it that is very atmospheric of the show. Fantastic writing and a gripping plot. I, of course, can't *not* mention the heated burn of hot sex.

John, Sam and Dean move into their first home after Mary. Sam refuses to sleep and John begins to suspect there's something sinister in the house. Oh wow. Ok, so this is not at all my typical thing, but I really really liked it. There are so many tiny details that just click for me. First, it starts off with saying that John and the boys have been on the road for 2 years trying to out run the thing that is after them. I have to tell you that goes a long way with me understanding John as a parent. I have always had one issue with John - that he chose revenge over his sons. (I love John, I'm not character bashing.) But this really makes since to me. That it might not have started as this burning revenge thing -that might have built slowly as he had to run and hide and protect Sam and Dean. It makes me like him *more* to think of it like this. Also, the idea of little Sam having such a hard time settling down in an actual home for any length of time after spending so much of his short life constantly on the move feels really natural to me. I don't know this author, but I think they did a wonderful job of understanding little children. Anyway, its weeSammy and big brother Dean (a little) and daddy John - there are no overly syrupy cute moments, just a snapshot of what life really might have been like for them.

He's sweet and polite, but you can already see the cocky confidence layered over his worries and insecurities. And Little Sammy - holding on tight to Big Brother but too smart for his own good so he just *has* to tell it all. And the Principal's reaction is pretty much how every woman reacts, and how can they not with those two boys?

Arts High School AU. Jared and Jensen deal with growing up and life with a little help from their friends. I realize this has been rec'd to high heaven, but it really is that good and really does deserve to be again. There's love and sex and friendship and angst and schmoop and family and just all sorts of stuff that any J2 fan will eat up. Add in that maerhys is a really good writer its a win, you know. I read it in the chronological order as a continuous story, but each snapshot does have its own flow and ebb, its own feel and distinctiveness - I think that even adds to the story actually.

So the first comment left by resqdog51 pretty much sums this up: ...you always write the most confusing shit that ends up making sense. Its kinda pre-slash, something a bit more than just friendship. Its lovely. And while it has a satisfying ending, it really could lead to a longer story that I think would be a great read. Also this line is awesome: Penises have no sense of loyalty. lol

Yes, it's my kinda fic - and I think you all know that that means. But jeyhawk is an old hand at writing good fanfic and this delivers nicely. Schmoop and hot sex and vanilla with the slightest touch of angst and true love winning out - dude, totally a sweet read. Now if we can just get the real Jensen on stage and sweaty enough to toss his shirt out to the audience... *winks*

So, I've come to realize that I'm a picky bitch when it comes to my Supernatural stories. I don't mean to be, but I am much more rigid in how I see Sam and Dean - or any of the characters from the show - than I am with Jensen and Jared.

I assume that is because while we have a glimpse of their personalities from interviews and conventions, we really don't know *them*. We don't know their heartaches or their true fears or what really makes them giddy with anticipation or how they sleep at night. I guess it is just easier to let the author paint the picture of who the guys are and so long as they follow close to what little we know, it works really well. Or with as with an AU, they can be very different with a decent back story to support it.

But for Sam and Dean - one of the reasons I love the show so much is that we *know* these characters. We know how shitty they grew up, we know what Dean's insecurities are and what deep repression Sam stays in. We know Sam sleeps like some kind of cyborg freak on straight on his back most of the time and that a relaxed Dean roles onto his tummy (managing to look adorable cute and sexy at the same time).

I guess when I read a story it won't work for me if it does not fit within the defined persona set by canon - even if it is AU. With Jensen and Jared's "canon", if you will, it is so small and riddled with holes it is much easier to fill it up as a writer sees fit, but Sam and Dean have a defined nature. At least, in my mind.

So why am I rambling on and on about this crap? Because I'm a dork? Well...ok, yeah, I am. But also because I needed to reason it out in my head - I love Supernatural fic more than RPS fic, actually. But I have posted a LOT more about J2 than Sam/Dean. And...I needed to let myself say that for some reason? What-the-fuck-ever..anyway, here a few Sam/Dean shorts I've read recently and enjoyed.

Beautiful and hot. I thought this was going to be a case-fic, or at least it started out that way. But it isn't. Its about Sam and Dean and missing having someone and finding each other again. And the image of Dean curled over Sam on his knees? Gorgeously sexy.

I just finished We Will Not Be Held Responsible and totally loved it. This entire verse is interesting, deep and sexy. It has tattoos and love and kids and freaky hot sex and all sorts of things. Its a fully developed 'verse with interesting secondary characters and a Jared and Jensen that seem to be at the core very realistic, but with enough back story and changes to make them uniquely different and entirely intriguing. Ok..Imma stop with the thesaurus. Lets just say its very cool 'verse and I did a bit of *flail*ing over many parts of it.

Yes, its feels dirty hot wrong (YUM), but it also has layers of love, angst and *Winchester*. You can see these two boys fighting so hard to be a family, hanging so tightly to what little they have. And Dean, doing the absolute best he knows how to take care of Sam, to make sure Sam never feels wrong or like a freak. And the sexual discovery, wooboy. Yeah, that part is completely YUM.

Making you ache at how life for the Winchesters is/was. Sam's desperate wanting to not be what John turning hiim - them - into and Dean's earnest attempts at being what everyone else needs him to be - makes you want to *whimper* at the angst of it all.

I think it was supposed to be crack - and with sparkley unicorns and amnesia plot lines how could it not be? - but between the really good writing, the unexpected romance, the stinging angst and heartache Dean goes through and the simple loveliness of season 1 Winchester boys it just really can't let itself be crack.

His life is further upended when he builds a friendship with actor Jensen Ackles, who turns him onto more entertainment and opens his eyes to the beauty of this creative world. I'm a really impressed with this. This was an amazing job of bringing a classic piece of literature into the fandom world. And I just think that Fahrenheit 451, the book this is based on, is something everyone should read, so I was excited for this to have worked out so well.

Things have been ending for a while now. The is lovely writing style, that gives deep expressive and descriptive implications to subtle nuances. Jensen and Jared road trip to Texas after the show finally ends. You get the sense of the places they visit and how they feel about each other even though they are stilted in their attempts to actually discuss anything. The ease of their friendship tangible and solid.

Animal Psychologist Jensen Ackles has been sent on a very mysterious mission for the US Government. When he finally meets the ‘animal’ they want him to tame, he realizes that he is out of his depth. Will he be able to fulfill his dangerous mission or will he leave his strange charge in the hands of people who do not really understand him. Sometimes you just want to read something that is so very AU and far removed from anything realistic, ya know? Well, I do, at least. I can't help it, I love things like this. Maybe the stories are implausible, but they are unique. And when you've read as much fanfic as I have, that can be powerfully alluring. I love how child-like Jared is. Stripping a person down to their basic instincts is fascinating. And topped with lovely happy-ever-afters, of course I enjoyed these.

At nine they have nothing in common, at sixteen the introverted, closed off, snarky Jensen still has nothing in common with the wild child, firebrand, free spirit that is Jared, but the decisions they make in life mean that eventually this could all change.
This is easily one of the best AUs in fandom. I doubt there is anyone that read my journal that hasn't read this fic. I just happen to click on it today by accident and got caught up in it again. I think I've actually read it like 4 times - yes, its that good. I keep thinking I need to say something profound about a story of this caliber to try to do it justice with a description. But really, I don't need to. The very few that haven't read it can look at the many hundred - srsly - of comments to know that its a beautiful, amazing well written story. I've already posted about this story, but I figured anything I've read four times deserves another go.

So here is the deal, there was a recent post on spnstoryfinders asking for hurt Dean or something like that. Anyway, the topic interests me and there were a ton of links. I'm going through them. Some are really good. I'm still working through so there may be more to come.


We Belong Together by not_refined

Wincest AU. Sam and Dean, growing up and growing closer together in the ordinary world. I'm not sure how I missed posting about this when I read it almost a year ago. But when I stumbled across it again I found it tore me up just as much the second time around. Hauntingly beautiful. Dean being fragile like this makes my heart clinch. I love how wonderful John is to both the boys in this. Anyway, I'm sure most people have read it as not_refined is well known for some really amazing stories. Like the Still Life 'verse. The damage done to Dean only makes him more beautiful. The innocence and struggle of life that make up the fabric of Dean and Sam's life in that story is breathtaking. These two stories just really touch something deep in me.

Jared thinks his life sucks (even if he denies feeling bad about). He starts college, which he didn't want and he swears he will not make friends there. But then he meets another student, a boy with emerald eyes, who draws and draws, and draws . . . Jensen is an amazing artist, he's mysteriously shy, and Jared finds himself fascinated to the point of obsession. Can anyone explain to me why stories like this are so immensely intriguing to me? I mean, yes, the writing is good and I like the characters and all that, but why is young, confused Jared and a 'damaged' Jensen so mesmerizing? (And I mean that in terms of 'damaged!Jensen', not as in someone with his disability being damaged, k?) Is it the childlike innocence that somehow can merge and weave seamlessly with mature, adult actions? I honestly don't know why, but stories like this always snag my attention. When they are written well then its a win-win for me - this was, btw, a win-win.

A miscommunication results in a hurt 10-year-old Dean and a heart-to-heart between Sam and John. AU - deaf!Dean. Schmoop! This is a short little thing, but it is absolutely touching and darling. Little Sam was adorably cute, Dean is more of a concept - and him being deaf is just plain interesting to me, and John is very John, but maybe he'll get a clue in this world. Anyway, I really really wish this were a larger 'verse. The author did the characters great and I love the emotion of the story.

Man, I'm just in shreds over this one. rivers_bend left a comment that you should read: These chapters are just perfectly where I was wanting this to go. You're balancing the wild out of control and the sharply in control brilliantly, with both of them, and it's just shivery-good. It feels like show, too, all delicious grey areas and nothing black and white.

It's junior prom and Sam's got a date. What the hell does he do now? I've posted about a part of this 'series' before, but I just read this part and its still just as lovely. Oh Dean. Their relationship is just so complex and layered. Even when Dean is being the best big brother he knows how to be, even when he's being a dad because theirs is MIA, the bond they have ..gah, this is so clichè, but true.. transcends that. You can feel the subtext in every beat of the story - they are simply more than brothers. Call it gen, call it pre-slash, I don't care. But you can deny the *something* there and it pulses right under the surface.

Do you ever have those WTF? moment for yourself? When you really wanna bop yourself on the back of the head and say 'geez, get with it dude'. Yeah, I, sadly, have those moments a lot. *sigh*

This was my first indication that I had screwed up when I couldn't find this title in my tags. I mentioned the remix of it, but not this. Whateva.. This thing has a little bit of everything. Its angsty and yearning and funny and fleshed out and full of lovely schmoop. And hot. Major with the hotness, of course!

Yet after Jared sticks up for Jensen in an arbitrary bar fight, Jensen starts showing Jared the ropes of the ranch. As their friendship grows, their attraction to one another does as well, despite Jensen's struggles with his sexuality. Jared and Jensen learn each other and about the hardships of life and love all under the blistering heat of the Texas sun.
This was simply lovely. The very *idea* of Jensen on horseback and Jared sweaty in the Texas sun can send me to my knees. I mean that, srsly. mrstotten left a comment that really conveys my thoughts as well: I absolutely adore how you manage to get such a lovely mix of excellent dialougue and wonderfully descriptive detail...Beautifully visual beginning, it allowed me to picture everything so clearly and vividly in my mind with just a few words. It introduces the reader not only to Jared’s new surroundings but also gives us an idea of his usual environment, and lets us know just what a culture shock this will be. I don't mean to gank this great comment, but I couldn't have been as eloquent and these words really are perfect for this story.





~ completely OT, but Rambo (the newest one) is on my TV right now. Its the one with Julie Benz in it. I love that woman. I don't watch Dexter, but I'll catch clips on youtube just to see her. I think not only is she one of the most beautiful creatures ever, but her voice and the way she carries herself is awesome. She can not only flip between seeming soft, young and meek to jaded, aggresive and hellasexy in a heartbeat, but somehow merge them together to seem all those things at once. Darla will forever be one of my all-time favorite tv characters, in as much for her acting as for the writing.

An inconspicuous haunting leads Sam and Dean to Michigan, where all of a sudden, they find themselves house owners and cohabitants of a friendly ghost. If Sam had his way, they'd not only fix their new home during the upcoming renovations but also their relationship that has become so difficult. Written for whenthewarsover Vague spoilers for seasons 4 and 5. This is the kind of happily ever after that the boys deserve. A little bit of the supernatural mixed with their own special brand of angst and love.

So these are some fics that I have read, but so has EVERYONE else in fandom. If you haven't read these then you probably are brand new and just haven't read any fics yet. Why am I posting about them? Mostly because I'm anal that way and feel the need to have the titles listed for consistancy's sake more than anything else. I'm not going to write a long review for each one because I don't need to.

THEY ARE ALL AMAZING. THEY ARE ALL MADE OF WIN. They are all some of the absolute best written stories in fandom.

Sam stayed in college, but Dean shows up at graduation and all those things they refuse to say to one another... they all get said. And done. This bleeds with Dean's uncertainty and weariness and Sam's vehement entreaty that Dean face this, face them makes you feel the deep wanting very clearly. The last line wraps up beautifully exactly who and what Sam and Dean have, who they are to each other.
