Down and out in Bogalusa, where the summer sun don’t shine, just burns and churns and turns so bright ... All I can hear in my head is Louis Armstrong's rasping gravelly voice singing "...Bright blessed days...dark sacred nights. And I think to myself...what a wonderful world." The other lyrics of the song don't have anything to do with it, but those just keep filtering through my head. Honestly, the writing style in this is not anything like the things I typically enjoy, but this one really is beautiful. Its poetic and lyrical, with a burning and heat that inflames from under the skin. Its all feeling and touch and hedonistic warmth.

But then maboheme has that gift, you know? Bedtime Stories is one of the most lovely little Jensen&Jared pieces I've ever read. Again, that hedonistic warmth and poetic rhythm slide over your skin, only in this one tender and sloppy with a lightness that infuses the best kind of J2 stories. As it tells you, these are the kinds you listen to. Absolutely lovely, both of them.

But its not the kind I get to read often. It would be easy to say that its snarky, funny J2 living together kind of story. Cuz it is. But its also them being guys. Like real guys. With bad eating habits, unattractive moments, zits and a complete lack of the ability to actually sit down and talk out a situation. (Don't look at me that way, I have a large family full of guys.) I also really loved the fact that they have been best friends for 12 years. It gives off a vibe the real Jensen and Jared do - that deep down closeness you can only get from spending a lot of time with someone. So, to recap, there is snark, humor, 'manliness', friendship, hijinks, sex, and loyalty in their relationship. omg I'm in love. The story only lightly touches on these things, but you can really get a vibe for everything. Making this a Win in my book.

It's their wedding day, and pretty much everything that could possibly go wrong goes wrong. still, they're married! also, a cake fight of epic proportions. So lovely to read something schmoopy and sweet with a happy ending after all the painful loss and angst going on in J2 right now. I like how the little bits of their personalities are things only the other picks up on - like Jared knowing how to deal with Jensen's mounting anger. It is the little things that really reflect a close, lasting relationship.


And you may or may not care about this, so feel free to skip...

On the nature of AU. For a while now I've wanted to post about what I consider AU. You might have noticed something like this I put 'AU-ish'. And there are other things that have them dating starting at season 1 that I don't list as AU. To me, AU is for something that really is an Alternate Universe. Like, they meet as kids and become doctors or something. But something that pretty much the same until they meet each other for Supernatural then I think that is more of what could have happened in this reality if things had been different. I'm sorry, I'm not explaining it well. But that is my opinion ad that is why I do or don't put in AU. (This one is -ish because nothing in it is beyond the realm of this reality, but I can't tell from the story if they are actors on Supernatural or teachers in Texas, ya' know?)
And for Supernatural stories it has to be very AU for me to list it is such. In a world where monsters, demons and magic plays havoc anything can go. But say Mary didn't die, or Sam didn't got Stanford or they were raised separate then I'll list it as AU.

So here is the deal, there was a recent post on spnstoryfinders asking for hurt Dean or something like that. Anyway, the topic interests me and there were a ton of links. I'm going through them. Some are really good. I'm still working through so there may be more to come.

Wincest AU. Sam and Dean, growing up and growing closer together in the ordinary world. I'm not sure how I missed posting about this when I read it almost a year ago. But when I stumbled across it again I found it tore me up just as much the second time around. Hauntingly beautiful. Dean being fragile like this makes my heart clinch. I love how wonderful John is to both the boys in this. Anyway, I'm sure most people have read it as not_refined is well known for some really amazing stories. Like the Still Life 'verse. The damage done to Dean only makes him more beautiful. The innocence and struggle of life that make up the fabric of Dean and Sam's life in that story is breathtaking. These two stories just really touch something deep in me.

Jared thinks his life sucks (even if he denies feeling bad about). He starts college, which he didn't want and he swears he will not make friends there. But then he meets another student, a boy with emerald eyes, who draws and draws, and draws . . . Jensen is an amazing artist, he's mysteriously shy, and Jared finds himself fascinated to the point of obsession. Can anyone explain to me why stories like this are so immensely intriguing to me? I mean, yes, the writing is good and I like the characters and all that, but why is young, confused Jared and a 'damaged' Jensen so mesmerizing? (And I mean that in terms of 'damaged!Jensen', not as in someone with his disability being damaged, k?) Is it the childlike innocence that somehow can merge and weave seamlessly with mature, adult actions? I honestly don't know why, but stories like this always snag my attention. When they are written well then its a win-win for me - this was, btw, a win-win.

A miscommunication results in a hurt 10-year-old Dean and a heart-to-heart between Sam and John. AU - deaf!Dean. Schmoop! This is a short little thing, but it is absolutely touching and darling. Little Sam was adorably cute, Dean is more of a concept - and him being deaf is just plain interesting to me, and John is very John, but maybe he'll get a clue in this world. Anyway, I really really wish this were a larger 'verse. The author did the characters great and I love the emotion of the story.

Medium crossover (but pre-series, so not necessary to know anything about Medium). Um ,wow. Ok, this is so far out my normal range. Its pre-series (Sam is 13). It really is a case fic. No sex, no schmoop, no nuthin' I usually read. Not even like adorable Bebe Sam or anything. Its a straight out action case-fic. With humans, not supernatural creature, no less. But man! Its pretty fucking amazing. It really vibrates with the feel of the show. I can *see* this John Winchester perfectly. I can really see this happening, it reads smooth and clean and carries the very essence of each of the characters. Fast paced and intense, I hung on to every word. I loved how Sam and Dean really can show their training, yet not be perfect and still make mistakes. I like how much effort the writer put into letting us understand how someone who was raised with the boys training could asses a situation and what they see that 'normal' people don't. I just was an all around really good gen read. Notice its got a R rating- again, this isn't for sex. (which is my usual MO) This would totally be a Red Dawn R rating.

You're balancing the wild out of control and the sharply in control brilliantly, with both of them, and it's just shivery-good. It feels like show, too, all delicious grey areas and nothing black and white.

Their relationship is just so complex and layered. Even when Dean is being the best big brother he knows how to be, even when he's being a dad because theirs is MIA, the bond they have ..gah, this is so clichè, but true.. transcends that. You can feel the subtext in every beat of the story - they are simply more than brothers. Call it gen, call it pre-slash, I don't care. But you can deny the *something* there and it pulses right under the surface.

Dean gets some tail, literally, after a run in with a nix. You would think that between the title and the story summary this is going to be a crack fic, or at least cute and funny. And it is. Its got some funny moments where Sam is huffing at Dean being insufferable, some sweet parts where Sam is especially worried about Dean, and others where even Sam has to grin at Dean's sly maneuvering. But its also more than that. Its a very interesting, unique story, with some subtle dark moments. But really, my favorite is the alternate ending. The subtilty dissolves and the dangerous beauty that are Dean and Sam is mesmerizing.

You know my favorite books are always the ones that are in layers - where you can read it and take it at face value and enjoy it or you can think deeper and get even more out of it, maybe even something really different. For all that this is a tiny tiny little thing - like a drabble - it has that. On top it is adorably sweet. I just want to *smoosh* bebe Sammy and Wee Dean. But for me, I see some real depth in the subtext. Dean's sick and where is John? Also, the last line has a world of meaning for me.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed this tiny morsel.

Five times Sam was Dean’s voice, and one time he wasn’t. This is really very lovely. Dean is deaf, has been his whole life. Sam speaks for him. John's a little more brutal in this world than I really see him as, but it fits perfectly here. The connection, the loyalty and love between the boys is beautiful. The writing is minimalistic, but still very descriptive. I love how although Dean is still the big brother and takes care of Sam, in this world Sam's been taking care of Dean too. It makes me wonder if this Sam wouldn't gone off to college. I don't think so. I don't think he would leave Dean, but I'm not the writer and that part isn't in there. Truly precious read.

Together with Max, a doctor, they struggle through the flight with very limited medical equipment on board. Ok, I'm not sure how I found this link. It was probably a rec, but I can't remember from where. It is Jared and Jensen and while it is technically gen, you could see it as pre-slash (don't I always?) as they are beyond close. It has a very realistic feel to it (although I have no idea if any of the medical stuff was right). Jared's worry and frantic care for Jensen made me want to hug him and rub his back. It was all very intense. Nice read.

Nice, easy flow and cool character interaction.

Which lead by to musesfool's Process Stories, another Supernatural/Buffy crossover. Only this has (het *gasp*) Buffy/Sam kissage. Dang it. How come there isn't more well written realistic xovers for these to fandoms?

You’re working with four out of five senses, John always tells him. Four out of five. Those are Sam’s numbers, the definition of his being, the handicap that describes who he is, the only thing he’s ever going to be. Beautiful and very well done story. Somewhat haunting and broken, but yet also not... Just a story about a family and their lives, the good and the bad. I love that Dean and Sam are just as close in this world as in canon - that they 'talk' so much. I love that they fight like any other brothers, but still love with that special Winchester fierceness. The last one makes you hate and pity John at the same time. Yet you know John wouldn't be so fucked up if he didn't love so very intensely. Just like his boys.

When you were five, you met your father for the first time. This is not in a style I usually care for. Its stark with almost no dialog. But its very well down - there is a stillness to it, like a lake of deep pain that is so full but still and quiet on the surface. Its sad, but with a hopeful ending. It makes you stop and think and visualize what Dean is perceiving, all the while telling you exactly how it is in a detached sort of feel.

I am not a big fan of Evil!Sam or Sam as the 'antichrist'. (In fic, lets not talk about the show, k?) And although the sex is technically 'het', it really is Sam/Dean Wincest.
However, I don't want to sound like I didn't like it. britomart_is is a talented writer and made a plot I wouldn't normally care for a good read. Quality writing is kind of awesome like that. And if you do happen to like Evil!Sam then you really will love this.

Little Sammy just makes your ovaries tingle! There are a few more, like It's What You Do that can stand alone and are just heartbreaking snapshots of the boys growing up. They make me want to grab the boys and hold them tight and then maybe shake John Winchester within an inch of his life for choosing hunting and revenge over being a real father.

(Again, not the darkfic bloody way.) The writing just flows and ebbs in a perfect pounding force. And the boys - unable to complete sentences and thoughts at the end.. Fuck yeah was my immediate reaction.

A family tragedy during a hunt redirects the lives of the Winchester's in a way they could have never predicted. Yes, its gen. Even has het off to the side later on. So this fic isn't perfect. It has its stylistic and writing flaws. However, you know those stories that if you analyze and take them apart you find fault, but taken as a whole there is something very interesting and appealing about them? Where some parts are so great you love it all? This, for me, was one of those. There is something about a damaged Sam, about John learning how to be a real father, about Dean getting a golden life that is just so appealing.

We get a little further from perfection each year on the road. Future fic: 5 years hence. Sam and Dean are still learning how to go on living. This story has some great characters - the original characters were well fleshed out, Jo and Ellen solid and Sam and Dean well done. And Jordy is a doll. The case they work on flows well within the plot of the real story and is easily something that could be on the show. Filled with confusion, devotion, hesitation and all sorts of complex emotions the relationship between the boys is painful and sweet - lovely, just lovely.

Between the image of Dean sucking down massive amounts of chocolate milk (that isn't really milk cause its chocolate!)and 11 year old Dean hustling kids over skee ball and an excited Gideon flittering around on his way out the door *Because look Ma, the boys are takin' me Hunting!!* I came to realize this was one of the most enjoyable show-like gen fics I've read in SPN. Not to mention, a great crossover where all the characters were completely IN character. The plot was also steady and true. Just all around nice job.
