Meeting up years later the two must overcome old issues - both with each other and in their lives since they parted company - to find what they both now need: love. I just love Jensen choice of career in this, I really really do. I also like how although Jared is hurt and sad and mopes a bit he's also an adult an ultimately isn't a pushover sap. I LOVE the comic style drawings - they are awesome and really add to the overall depth of the story.

While they are both actors it is an AU as they are working on a movie together and not Supernatural. I can totally see Jared's easy charm and gorgeous smile getting all sorts of random hook-ups. How could anyone not want to hook-up with that? I only wish that last scene had been boosted up to an NC-17 rating. *wiggles eyebrows*

After Sam pulls Dean out of Hell, Dean stops talking. It takes a week for Sam to convince Dean to open his mouth so Sam can check that his tongue hasn’t been cut out. It takes two weeks for Sam to accept that Dean really isn’t talking. Then it takes a week of silence, the two of them sitting in the Impala like ventriloquist dummies, sitting in motel rooms like human taxidermy, before Sam decides to start talking for the both of them. Intense and powerful in its progression and development. For all that it is au-ish and different, it has a darkly realistic quality to it that is very atmospheric of the show. Fantastic writing and a gripping plot. I, of course, can't *not* mention the heated burn of hot sex.

John, Sam and Dean move into their first home after Mary. Sam refuses to sleep and John begins to suspect there's something sinister in the house. Oh wow. Ok, so this is not at all my typical thing, but I really really liked it. There are so many tiny details that just click for me. First, it starts off with saying that John and the boys have been on the road for 2 years trying to out run the thing that is after them. I have to tell you that goes a long way with me understanding John as a parent. I have always had one issue with John - that he chose revenge over his sons. (I love John, I'm not character bashing.) But this really makes since to me. That it might not have started as this burning revenge thing -that might have built slowly as he had to run and hide and protect Sam and Dean. It makes me like him *more* to think of it like this. Also, the idea of little Sam having such a hard time settling down in an actual home for any length of time after spending so much of his short life constantly on the move feels really natural to me. I don't know this author, but I think they did a wonderful job of understanding little children. Anyway, its weeSammy and big brother Dean (a little) and daddy John - there are no overly syrupy cute moments, just a snapshot of what life really might have been like for them.

He's sweet and polite, but you can already see the cocky confidence layered over his worries and insecurities. And the Principal's reaction is pretty much how every woman reacts, and how can they not with those two boys?

Arts High School AU. Jared and Jensen deal with growing up and life with a little help from their friends. I realize this has been rec'd to high heaven, but it really is that good and really does deserve to be again. There's love and sex and friendship and angst and schmoop and family and just all sorts of stuff that any J2 fan will eat up. Add in that maerhys is a really good writer its a win, you know. I read it in the chronological order as a continuous story, but each snapshot does have its own flow and ebb, its own feel and distinctiveness - I think that even adds to the story actually.

Schmoop and hot sex and vanilla with the slightest touch of angst and true love winning out - dude, totally a sweet read. Now if we can just get the real Jensen on stage and sweaty enough to toss his shirt out to the audience... *winks*

So, I've come to realize that I'm a picky bitch when it comes to my Supernatural stories. I don't mean to be, but I am much more rigid in how I see Sam and Dean - or any of the characters from the show - than I am with Jensen and Jared.

I assume that is because while we have a glimpse of their personalities from interviews and conventions, we really don't know *them*. We don't know their heartaches or their true fears or what really makes them giddy with anticipation or how they sleep at night. I guess it is just easier to let the author paint the picture of who the guys are and so long as they follow close to what little we know, it works really well. Or with as with an AU, they can be very different with a decent back story to support it.

But for Sam and Dean - one of the reasons I love the show so much is that we *know* these characters. We know how shitty they grew up, we know what Dean's insecurities are and what deep repression Sam stays in. We know Sam sleeps like some kind of cyborg freak on straight on his back most of the time and that a relaxed Dean roles onto his tummy (managing to look adorable cute and sexy at the same time).

I guess when I read a story it won't work for me if it does not fit within the defined persona set by canon - even if it is AU. With Jensen and Jared's "canon", if you will, it is so small and riddled with holes it is much easier to fill it up as a writer sees fit, but Sam and Dean have a defined nature. At least, in my mind.

So why am I rambling on and on about this crap? Because I'm a dork? Well...ok, yeah, I am. But also because I needed to reason it out in my head - I love Supernatural fic more than RPS fic, actually. But I have posted a LOT more about J2 than Sam/Dean. And...I needed to let myself say that for some reason? What-the-fuck-ever..anyway, here a few Sam/Dean shorts I've read recently and enjoyed.

Beautiful and hot. I thought this was going to be a case-fic, or at least it started out that way. But it isn't. Its about Sam and Dean and missing having someone and finding each other again. And the image of Dean curled over Sam on his knees? Gorgeously sexy.

A very nice little short and sweet to make you smile.

Solid, crisp writing and interesting AU setting and a Jensen that is completely captivating.

This is just flat out fucking hot. The original is amazing too. You also won't want to miss the other 2 stories of the 'verse the author is placing this in - especially Setting the Mood. Its an amazing mesh of Sam/Dean and Sam/Jess that is extremely hot, but Sam's grief also adds a touch of melancholy to it. Nice set of reads.

These secrets start to take their toll at home, where Dean is harboring his own secret, one that might be the most life-changing of all. This was really cool. Something a little different for me - a case fic with a decidedly Sam-focus. The main plot is not about Sam&Dean. Its about one of Sam's experiences in high school, homophobia and what is probably his first solo hunt. I really enjoyed it. And for me, of course, it was made all the better because it did lead to Wincest and Sam&Dean. I thought it was a win all the way around.

The Self-Importance of Being Jensen by vicious_trade

In the summer hiatus before season five of Supernatural, Jensen has a lot on his plate. It's hotter than hell outside. There's an extremely impatient girlfriend waiting for him in LA. Jared's under the weather and leaving a trail of life-sucking germs throughout the house. Plus, not to mention, the all-encompassing inner battle to 'do the right thing'. Whatever the hell that is.
I really sorta love this. NO offense to the real Jensen and Danneel (they're beautiful together), but in my fan-world this is the perfect kinda ending and I WANT IT TO BE CANON. Even the sick, hurt Jared part- Jensen taking care of him is totally perfect. This is one of the those stories where the characters speak and feel so much like the real thing that you get carried away thinking 'yes, this should so happen!'. I love the easy, realistic flow of their relationship. The honest, small minute details of living with someone that makes everything seem fuller, more real.

Jared watches from the sidelines as Jensen's career disintegrates in the passage of four five-minute rounds, and refuses to stay away. What they have, and the man Jensen doesn't realize he can be, are worth fighting for.
Alright alright, I'll be honest. This has been rec'd all over the place, but I have just been really resistant to read it. I just didn't think I would really buy Jensen in this role. Not a fighter, but the whole champion thing. My presumptions about what kind of character he would be were completely off base, as was the notion that I wouldn't like it. Duh. It was a good read. The quiet determination Jensen shows, Jared's friendly nature and their chemistry were good, but I was surprised to really enjoy the training and fight descriptions. I have no idea how accurate they are, but it all reads very well - you can feel the pulse and flash of a fight night clearly.

Down and out in Bogalusa, where the summer sun don’t shine, just burns and churns and turns so bright ... All I can hear in my head is Louis Armstrong's rasping gravelly voice singing "...Bright blessed days...dark sacred nights. And I think to myself...what a wonderful world." The other lyrics of the song don't have anything to do with it, but those just keep filtering through my head. Honestly, the writing style in this is not anything like the things I typically enjoy, but this one really is beautiful. Its poetic and lyrical, with a burning and heat that inflames from under the skin. Its all feeling and touch and hedonistic warmth.

But then maboheme has that gift, you know? Bedtime Stories is one of the most lovely little Jensen&Jared pieces I've ever read. Again, that hedonistic warmth and poetic rhythm slide over your skin, only in this one tender and sloppy with a lightness that infuses the best kind of J2 stories. As it tells you, these are the kinds you listen to. Absolutely lovely, both of them.

I just finished We Will Not Be Held Responsible and totally loved it. This entire verse is interesting, deep and sexy. It has tattoos and love and kids and freaky hot sex and all sorts of things. Its a fully developed 'verse with interesting secondary characters and a Jared and Jensen that seem to be at the core very realistic, but with enough back story and changes to make them uniquely different and entirely intriguing. Ok..Imma stop with the thesaurus. Lets just say its very cool 'verse and I did a bit of *flail*ing over many parts of it.

Yes, its feels dirty hot wrong (YUM), but it also has layers of love, angst and *Winchester*. You can see these two boys fighting so hard to be a family, hanging so tightly to what little they have. And Dean, doing the absolute best he knows how to take care of Sam, to make sure Sam never feels wrong or like a freak. And the sexual discovery, wooboy. Yeah, that part is completely YUM.

Making you ache at how life for the Winchesters is/was. Sam's desperate wanting to not be what John turning hiim - them - into and Dean's earnest attempts at being what everyone else needs him to be - makes you want to *whimper* at the angst of it all.

How come I didn't know about this!?! *sigh* Anyway, this is a lovely little fic of crack-that-couldn't. lol. I think it was supposed to be crack - and with sparkley unicorns and amnesia plot lines how could it not be? - but between the really good writing, the unexpected romance, the stinging angst and heartache Dean goes through and the simple loveliness of season 1 Winchester boys it just really can't let itself be crack.

Media Agent Jared Padalecki upholds the Freeze, destroying media and arresting those who possess it. But his world viewpoint is skewed when he watches a TV show and experiences what all the offenders have – raw emotion. His life is further upended when he builds a friendship with actor Jensen Ackles, who turns him onto more entertainment and opens his eyes to the beauty of this creative world. I'm a really impressed with this. This was an amazing job of bringing a classic piece of literature into the fandom world. And I just think that Fahrenheit 451, the book this is based on, is something everyone should read, so I was excited for this to have worked out so well.

Things have been ending for a while now. The is lovely writing style, that gives deep expressive and descriptive implications to subtle nuances. Jensen and Jared road trip to Texas after the show finally ends. You get the sense of the places they visit and how they feel about each other even though they are stilted in their attempts to actually discuss anything. The ease of their friendship tangible and solid.

Animal Psychologist Jensen Ackles has been sent on a very mysterious mission for the US Government. When he finally meets the ‘animal’ they want him to tame, he realizes that he is out of his depth. Will he be able to fulfill his dangerous mission or will he leave his strange charge in the hands of people who do not really understand him. Sometimes you just want to read something that is so very AU and far removed from anything realistic, ya know? Well, I do, at least. I can't help it, I love things like this. Maybe the stories are implausible, but they are unique. And when you've read as much fanfic as I have, that can be powerfully alluring. I love how child-like Jared is. Stripping a person down to their basic instincts is fascinating. And topped with lovely happy-ever-afters, of course I enjoyed these.

On the eve of college graduation, two best friends struggle with the label on their relationship and that hazy thing called the future. This? Is totally my kind of fic. But its not the kind I get to read often. It would be easy to say that its snarky, funny J2 living together kind of story. Cuz it is. But its also them being guys. Like real guys. With bad eating habits, unattractive moments, zits and a complete lack of the ability to actually sit down and talk out a situation. (Don't look at me that way, I have a large family full of guys.) I also really loved the fact that they have been best friends for 12 years. It gives off a vibe the real Jensen and Jared do - that deep down closeness you can only get from spending a lot of time with someone. So, to recap, there is snark, humor, 'manliness', friendship, hijinks, sex, and loyalty in their relationship. omg I'm in love. The story only lightly touches on these things, but you can really get a vibe for everything. Making this a Win in my book.

It's their wedding day, and pretty much everything that could possibly go wrong goes wrong. still, they're married! also, a cake fight of epic proportions. So lovely to read something schmoopy and sweet with a happy ending after all the painful loss and angst going on in J2 right now. I like how the little bits of their personalities are things only the other picks up on - like Jared knowing how to deal with Jensen's mounting anger. It is the little things that really reflect a close, lasting relationship.


And you may or may not care about this, so feel free to skip...

On the nature of AU. For a while now I've wanted to post about what I consider AU. You might have noticed something like this I put 'AU-ish'. And there are other things that have them dating starting at season 1 that I don't list as AU. To me, AU is for something that really is an Alternate Universe. Like, they meet as kids and become doctors or something. But something that pretty much the same until they meet each other for Supernatural then I think that is more of what could have happened in this reality if things had been different. I'm sorry, I'm not explaining it well. But that is my opinion ad that is why I do or don't put in AU. (This one is -ish because nothing in it is beyond the realm of this reality, but I can't tell from the story if they are actors on Supernatural or teachers in Texas, ya' know?)
And for Supernatural stories it has to be very AU for me to list it is such. In a world where monsters, demons and magic plays havoc anything can go. But say Mary didn't die, or Sam didn't got Stanford or they were raised separate then I'll list it as AU.

But honestly, that is what it is. And I actually liked it. For all that it has something really horrific in it and treats it respectfully, it really is just light schmoop. Like domestic dating and Twu Luv. So vanilla you might ask for chocolate sprinkles on top. But like I said, it was a good read for me.

Then I figured out that I hadn't. And then I was kind of excited because, of course, that meant I had to read it again so I would get the details right. Man, it was just as good as I remember. Teenage usting, friendship and schmoop. *happysigh*. First-time sex, drunken kisses and sexual discovery. *swoon*

There were several like this where Jared uses Brock as a stand in for his lust for Jensen. This one, however, is one of the best. Full of steam and jealousy - yum.

This is easily one of the best AUs in fandom. I doubt there is anyone that read my journal that hasn't read this fic. I just happen to click on it today by accident and got caught up in it again. I think I've actually read it like 4 times - yes, its that good. I keep thinking I need to say something profound about a story of this caliber to try to do it justice with a description. But really, I don't need to. The very few that haven't read it can look at the many hundred - srsly - of comments to know that its a beautiful, amazing well written story. I've already posted about this story, but I figured anything I've read four times deserves another go.
