Wincest AU. Sam and Dean, growing up and growing closer together in the ordinary world. I'm not sure how I missed posting about this when I read it almost a year ago. But when I stumbled across it again I found it tore me up just as much the second time around. Hauntingly beautiful. Dean being fragile like this makes my heart clinch. I love how wonderful John is to both the boys in this. Anyway, I'm sure most people have read it as not_refined is well known for some really amazing stories. Like the Still Life 'verse. The damage done to Dean only makes him more beautiful. The innocence and struggle of life that make up the fabric of Dean and Sam's life in that story is breathtaking. These two stories just really touch something deep in me.

Jared thinks his life sucks (even if he denies feeling bad about). He starts college, which he didn't want and he swears he will not make friends there. But then he meets another student, a boy with emerald eyes, who draws and draws, and draws . . . Jensen is an amazing artist, he's mysteriously shy, and Jared finds himself fascinated to the point of obsession. Can anyone explain to me why stories like this are so immensely intriguing to me? I mean, yes, the writing is good and I like the characters and all that, but why is young, confused Jared and a 'damaged' Jensen so mesmerizing? (And I mean that in terms of 'damaged!Jensen', not as in someone with his disability being damaged, k?) Is it the childlike innocence that somehow can merge and weave seamlessly with mature, adult actions? I honestly don't know why, but stories like this always snag my attention. When they are written well then its a win-win for me - this was, btw, a win-win.

A miscommunication results in a hurt 10-year-old Dean and a heart-to-heart between Sam and John. AU - deaf!Dean. Schmoop! This is a short little thing, but it is absolutely touching and darling. Little Sam was adorably cute, Dean is more of a concept - and him being deaf is just plain interesting to me, and John is very John, but maybe he'll get a clue in this world. Anyway, I really really wish this were a larger 'verse. The author did the characters great and I love the emotion of the story.

This is very short, but its beautifully written. One comment said they loved the melancholy undertones and I agree, it has just the right tinge of sadness over the the love. munibunny left a reply to a comment: But see? The next day, Dean settles down on the couch for a nap while Sammy goes about fixing dinner, grumbling under his breath about Dean having to renew his Playboy subscription. And I really really wish there was a 'next day' shot with this - just the thought makes me smile.

Five times Sam was Dean’s voice, and one time he wasn’t. This is really very lovely. Dean is deaf, has been his whole life. Sam speaks for him. John's a little more brutal in this world than I really see him as, but it fits perfectly here. The connection, the loyalty and love between the boys is beautiful. The writing is minimalistic, but still very descriptive. I love how although Dean is still the big brother and takes care of Sam, in this world Sam's been taking care of Dean too. It makes me wonder if this Sam wouldn't gone off to college. I don't think so. I don't think he would leave Dean, but I'm not the writer and that part isn't in there. Truly precious read.

Jared meets Jensen. Jared falls in love with Jensen. Jensen… needs a little coaxing. Also starring Chad the Maintenance Guy, Danneel in Payroll, Tom as the mildly disgruntled Mail Room Guy and Mike in HR. And Misha the Receptionist? Still ruining lives. Mostly Tom’s. And Jared’s. But mostly Tom’s (who deals with it like any rational person would: mail bombs and spiked coffee). Ohmigawd, I just totally love this. The cutest little romance! A teeny tiny bit of angsty-usting as all truly good romances have. I don't have much more to say really, it was just such a good romcom! Simple as that. Jared is adorkable cute, Misha is perfectly spot-on, (Chad is the perfect douche), and Jensen is hot as the shy quiet type - lol, in other words, hot as Jensen usually is! *grins*

I so want to shout: Get over it Kripke, make this canon! Fangirls the world over would melt with happiness. The voices are so very much 'Sam' and 'Dean'. It feels like it could be a natural conclusion. Hell, even John reads as 'John' - great tone on him.

I put this up over at crack_impala a while back, but I just re-read it and wanted to include it here as well.

Par for the course, almost nothing goes as planned. Witnesses, tag-along’s and death converge on a Manor House where fear reigns. For the Dead Keep Naught and the Winchesters have no intention of letting death win. I really liked the interaction between the boys in this one. I think it reads very natural as them. The story does sort of jump into it with them already having a history it seems like, but that doesn't distract from the story. This is a 'case fic' and the case is pretty cool and spooky. I love Sam's jealousy in this. It also has a 'dating' feel to a lot of the scenes which is just *SQUEE*! So yeah, a bit of drama and angst, some spooky MoW, some awkward adorable boys - its an episode all right. Oh wait - then there's the hot sex, so that makes it the episode Kripke *wishes* he could air. LOL

Through the trials of learning to live in the 'community' he also meets his new 'brother', another boy his age, Jared Cooke. Jared has never known life outside of his family or the Covenant, and he is drawn to Jensen irrevocably. Jared wants so badly for Jensen to accept his new life, to stay with him. For the newly initiated Jensen, the Covenant is a living nightmare that he wants to escape- with Jared, if he can. This story contains religious aspects, as scripture is twisted to meet the needs of men. Oh I really love interestingly new settings for AU stories. Never thought I would see *this* scenario in a J2 fic, but that was half the fun of the read! Its so easy to see Jensen as this beaten, scrappy street smart kid. It should be a 'dark fic' because of all of the abuse. (Read the warnings, btw, to be sure its your cuppa.) And the life Jensen has lead, but the relationship between the teenaged Jared and Jensen is sweet and light, for all that is hot and heavy(!).

Jared Padalecki is a high class business man, Jensen Ackles is a high class prostitute. But this is no Pretty Woman remake; when Jensen's diagnosed with cancer, Jared decides he has to look after Jensen, even if Jensen doesn't want to be looked after by his former client and it's not long before their strictly business relationship becomes very complicated. Who doesn't love a J2 hurt/comfort schmoop fic? The angst is light, but enough to give it a balance so the schmoop isn't too sugary sweet. The author deals respectfully to the idea of Jensen struggle with cancer and there is, of course, a happy ending. This was a nice easy read to kick back with after a long day at work, ya' know?

Dean and Sam are helping Bobby on a case when Dean learns that his brother has been hiding things from him, things that could ultimately tear them apart. In the aftermath, an even bigger secret is revealed, one that neither of them realized they’d been sharing. With Kripke's love of the 'bromance' maybe we would have seen something more along these lines in season 4 if the show was on HBO instead of the CW...yeah, ok, probably not, but I like to think.. lol, Anyway, this is fun 'little' big bang read. Implausible and all that, but sweet and schmoopy - which I usually associate with J2 fics, so its nice to read a Sam/Dean one for a change.

(Not darkfic) You know that hazy, heavy saturated feel you get on a hot night in the Deep South? Like that. There is an almost visceral feel to it, in a heart-pumping edgy tension way. (Again, not the darkfic bloody way.) The writing just flows and ebbs in a perfect pounding force. And the boys - unable to complete sentences and thoughts at the end.. Fuck yeah was my immediate reaction.

A family tragedy during a hunt redirects the lives of the Winchester's in a way they could have never predicted. Yes, its gen. Even has het off to the side later on. So this fic isn't perfect. It has its stylistic and writing flaws. However, you know those stories that if you analyze and take them apart you find fault, but taken as a whole there is something very interesting and appealing about them? Where some parts are so great you love it all? This, for me, was one of those. There is something about a damaged Sam, about John learning how to be a real father, about Dean getting a golden life that is just so appealing.

Dean's always hustled for their living. And he was getting pretty good at it. But not everyone is a good loser and Dean's discovered being good at one thing meant being tragically wrong about the other. And when the healing begins, will the boys find their way back to each other? Just to start off with, this is a whopper of a fic. Over 165,000 words. Yeah, make sure you've got some time for this one. You should also know that some of the warnings for it are: Graphic Torture, Graphic Violence, Non-Con/Rape. So yeah, its not a happy fic - although that isn't to say there isn't a happy ending. Basically the boys are taking by bad guys and are then tortured and raped. The story is, by nature of the plot, dark and graphic. However, it has some great interaction between Sam and Dean that I totally fell for. Its the unwavering devotion that endures this fic to me. And while the non-con does nothing for me, later on the Sam/Dean sexin is pretty damn not. And, at times, completely cute.

Sam and Dean from John's POV. I am also submitting this over at crack_impala as well, but I wanted to write more about it than I have space for over there. This fic combines two of absolute favorite themes of Supernatural fanfic - Sam and Dean just always naturally being Sam&Dean and 'John knows'. *happysigh* Okay, so this fic starts out pretty much from birth with glimpses of how John sees Sam and Dean up through Season 1. We only get the tiniest of glimpses of them being Sam&Dean, but John is well aware of just how close the boys grow up to be. Its got some charmingly sweet moments of the boys growing up and some painful ones later on. Dean's anguish over Sam leaving is just lovely.


Louder Than Words 'Verse by splashpink
The Epic Romance (c) of deaf!Jensen and actor!Jared, complete with cast of chaotic, neurotic, and downright certifiable friends. Oh so much to adore in this 'verse. A ton of adorably funny shots with 'aww geez' schmoopy sadness coupled with a unique plot and topped off with the fragile hella-hot young-ish Jensen (think before Dean's toughness made him more 'manly' seeming) make it a great read. Jensen is just one symptom of the disease he suffers from and the hurt!Jensen factor is nicely done here. In a twist I've not come across before the story actually starts off with Jensen dating Jared's long-time friend David Boreanaz. Its, of course, a complete AU universe. Jared does play Sam Winchester, but (and this is the only part that has me blinking disbelievingly) Marc Blucas plays Dean. (I know, I know! But there is very little 'Sam' or 'Dean'-ishness, its all about them as themselves.) So, yeah, kinda different, huh? I like it.
